Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs
What quantity of fingerlings can be released in a scientifically developed fish pond of one hectare?
- In a pond of such size 8000 pieces of Indian Major Carp can be introduced and reared.
- There may be three layers — bottom, middle and upper. The bottom layer can have common carp, mirika and Bata. The middle layer can have rohu and grass carp. Catla and silver carp can be raised in the upper layer.
- The layer wise ratio is 40:30:30. or 30:40:30
- A depth of 4 to 5 feet helps in proper growth of fish. In that depth, the suns rays can reach the lower parts and that assists in the generation of natural fish food like zoo plankton.
- The fish feed can be MOC, Rice bran. High protein enriched feed can also be given. The amount of fish feed should be two per cent of the weight (approx) of the fish in the pond.
- The Ph value should be between 7 – 8. It can be measured by Ph paper available in meen bipani.
- This is due to lack of oxygen in the water.
- Providing water through machine pumps can add the required oxygen to the pond’s water.
- Nowadays, some methods like use of airometer can be used to add oxygen content.
- This can be remedied by using CIFAX.
Integrated fish farming, in which a fishery has an adjoining piggery, is a very profitable venture. This is done by making a scientifically designed pig pen near a pond. The advantages are –
- Faeces of the pigs is a good fertiliser and it raises the biological productivity of the pond. It becomes natural feed for the fish.
- Less feed for the fish needs to be supplied. Sixty to seventy per cent of the faeces are undigested food which is direct feed for the fish.
- The same space can be used for both the activities.
- The light layer is a type of algae. It should be removed by netting. The problem can also be addressed by adding cow urine.
- It can be highly rewarding when fish culture in combined with piggery and duckery. Both pigs and ducks help add nutrients though their waste. This reduces the amount of fish feed that is otherwise required. In a similar vein plantations near the pond can be used for banana and kitchen garden, adding value for the farmers.
- In a pond measuring one hectare 600kg of lime should be applied. Of this, 200 kg should be put before the fingerlings are introduced. After that 40 kg should be applied on a given date every month for 10 months.
- The following steps are required to develop a fish pond – All unwanted aquatic plants like water hyacinth have to be removed.
- If required the old water can be pumped out and replaced with fresh water and unwanted fish totally removed.
- After the mud in the pond’s bottom is removed, it should be dried under the sun.
- The dry bed of the pond can be tilled and 200 kg of lime put in per hectare.
- Seven to ten days after applying the lime, about 300 kg if cow dung has to be put in.
- About seven to 10 days later the fingerlings can be introduced.
- Rice bran, mustard oil cake, or protein enriched fish feed should be provided every day.
- The pond has to be kept clean.
- As a remedy against sores on fish, Cifax / Aqua health medicines should be used in October/November.
- Every month 40kg of lime (per hectare) should be applied.
- Every month 1200kg of fresh cow dung should be added to the water.
- Once every month 20 kg of urea and 30 kg of SSP should be used per hectare.
- From time to time fish should be checked for growth.
