Empowering the Future: 550 Farmers Skilled for the Blue Revolution! 🐟🚀

Kalong-Kapili proudly celebrates the successful completion of a 5-Day Residential Training Programme on Sustainable & Modern Aquaculture Practices for 550 farmers from Ri Bhoi District, Meghalaya.

The programme was conducted in 11 batches, with 50 farmers in each batch, creating a strong foundation for climate-resilient and scientifically managed aquaculture across the region.

This transformative journey commenced on 16 February 2026 with a flag-off ceremony led by Shri Abhilash Baranwal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, and concluded with a valedictory session graced by Mrs. Medha Khongjliw, Superintendent of Fisheries, Ri Bhoi District along with Shri Jyotish Talukdar, Director Kalong-Kapili and Shri Binay Kumar Das, Deputy Director of Kalong-Kapili.



🎯 Key Focus Areas of the Training

The programme aimed to transform traditional fish farming into a modern, sustainable and profitable enterprise through intensive practical and technical learning:

🔹 Modern & Climate-Resilient Aquaculture
Training on scientific fish farming methods including composite fish culture, smart pond management and climate-resilient technologies.

🔹 Technical Skill Development
Hands-on exposure to pond preparation, stocking density, feed management, water quality monitoring and productivity enhancement.

🔹 Fish Health & Biosecurity
Capacity building on disease prevention, biosecurity protocols and efficient farm resource management.

🔹 Pre & Post-Stocking Management
Comprehensive understanding of nursery management, stocking practices, harvesting and post-stocking care.

🔹 Leadership & Communication Skills
Developing confidence, leadership qualities and public speaking skills to create village-level aquaculture champions.

🔹 Entrepreneurship & Livelihood Promotion
Encouraging farmers to become self-reliant aqua-entrepreneurs capable of mentoring and inspiring others in their communities.

As these 550 trained farmers return to their villages, they carry with them not only technical knowledge but also the vision to lead a sustainable aquaculture movement across Meghalaya.

"Aquaculture and Students – Growing Together"

A proud moment for Assam as, for the first time, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Arya Vidyapeeth College Autonomous, Guwahati Assam and the Aqua Tech Park of Kalong-Kapili with the vision that aquaculture and students will grow together through learning, innovation, livelihoods and sustainability.

This initiative will focus on strengthening education, research, internships, entrepreneurship, skill development, and sustainable livelihood opportunities for students.

The Aqua Tech Park has emerged as a game changer for sustainable development by integrating education, skills, innovation, and livelihood promotion.

The Aqua Tech Park was inaugurated by the Honourable Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on 12 July 2025 as a first-of-its-kind initiative in India.

The initiative has been developed with the support of NABARD, Government of Assam, ICAR-CIFA, GIZ India, SELCO Foundation, and the Department of Fisheries, Government of Assam.

The MoU was signed on 08 May 2026 by Dr Pradip Kr. Bhattacharya, Principal of Arya Vidyapeeth College Autonomous and Shri Jyotish Talukdar, Director of Kalong-Kapili.

Dr Jayanta Gogoi, HoD, Zoology Department and his team were also present during the signing ceremony.

A distinguished delegation of officials from #GIZIndia, the #GermanEmbassy, and #NABARD visited the #jiva Project site at the Borbeel cluster in Nagaon, Assam, to gain firsthand insights into the ongoing grassroots initiatives and community-led development efforts.

The visiting delegation included Mr. Johannes Schneider, Second Secretary, German Embassy; Ms. Meekha Hannah Paul, Director, NRMAe, GIZ India; Ms. Namerta Sharma; Mr. Deepak Chamola; Ms. Manoshi Chakravorty, Advisors, SuATI, GIZ; along with Dr. Jay Nigam, General Manager, NABARD Head Office, Mumbai; Ms. Bhama Deuri, AGM RO Assam; and Mr. Rajendra Prena, DDM, NABARD Nagaon.

During the visit, the team explored several innovative and community-driven interventions under the JIVA Project.

These included the:-
* Suryamandal, and ATM for nutrition garden
* Low cost poultry shed which can adapt to flood prone regions
* Fish seed rearing entrepreneur model.
* Local innovation— fish-cum-duck farming
* Bio Resource Centre (BRC)
* Utilisation of common land with banana plantation and intercropping.

The visit provided an opportunity for meaningful interaction with community members and stakeholders, highlighting sustainable livelihood models, climate-resilient practices, and grassroots innovation in action.

A total of 35 farmers from Kamrup district participated in an insightful exposure visit to the Aqua Tech Park of Kalong-Kapili, organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kamrup.

The visit formed a key component of the ongoing 15-day Self-Financed Training Programme for Agriculture Input Dealers of KVK Kamrup, focusing on sustainable and modern aquaculture practices.

Dr. Son Moina Bhuyan, Head of KVK Kamrup, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The programme was also attended by distinguished dignitaries including Mrs. Modhusmita Deka (SMS), Dr. Dorodi Priyom Daurah (SMS), Shri Binay Kumar Das, Deputy Director of Kalong-Kapili, along with executives and members of the technical team.
